Day of Rememberance

Sort of by accident, I went to the coolest event I’ve attended since moving back to Seattle. My friend Kelsey invited me to a Day of Rememberance lecture at the University of Washington, where the topic was art from the Japanese internment camps.

It’s still hard to believe that in this country American citizens were forced to leave their homes and jobs and were sent to live in internment camps.

Artist Frank Fujii spoke of his time in the camp and his art. He’s unveiling a new mural on March 12 somewhere near my apartment, I think.

Melanie King (Kelsey’s friend) lectured on the art that was created in the camps, and what artists are doing now to reflect the camps. I found the paintings of Roger Shimomura fascinating. I’m going to look into purchasing his work (with what money, I’m not sure.)

It was an eye-opening lecture. This is a part of history I need to explore deeper, especially since it directly affected my family.

Adjusting to life back in Seattle after a nice run in New York.
